Just a short month or two ago, I was preparing myself for the worst. I never read Wuthering Heights I thought worriedly, What if they ask me something about Bronte? I hated Bronte! I walked onto the Binghamton campus as a Writing student among English students vying to be an English teacher. How would I keep up? Would I?
Thankfully, I’ve learned that all those fears were nonsense. In this department, there seems to be room for anyone (with enough prerequisites) who wants to learn about the teaching of English to learn those skills and apply them in practice. Schmaltzy as it may be to say, I’m glad I’ve found a sortof Home in this department and this campus.
Where I’ve really been at home thus far in the semester is in the course readings. Authors and academics like Berlin, Ong, and Britton were really important to my undergraduate studies in Composition Theory. Kinneavy’s “Basic Arms of Discourse” were extremely important in me finding understanding in Writing Theory early on at Ithaca. Learning how to write in different situations, about different topics, with differing rhetorical voices was key to me finding confidence in my writing.
It sure is relieving to have some friendly faces still lighting the way for me.
